Saint Alphonsa

My name is Alphonsa, and I am named after Saint Alphonsa, whose faith and strength inspire me. Carrying her name is a reminder for me to live with faith and hope.

Saint Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most beloved saints of India and the first canonised woman saint from India. Her life is remembered for her deep faith, humility, and courageous embrace of suffering. Saint Alphonsa was born on 19 August 1910 in Kudamaloor, Kerala, and was baptised as Anna Muttathupadathu. She lost her mother at a young age and was raised by relatives. From childhood, she showed a strong desire for a religious life and a deep love for prayer. Although her family hoped she would marry, she felt called to religious life and even accepted suffering in order to preserve her vocation.

In 1927, Anna joined the Franciscan Clarist Congregation and took the name Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception. She made her religious profession in 1936. Her life as a nun was marked by simplicity, obedience, humility, and dedication to teaching and prayer. Her spirituality was shaped by deep devotion to the Eucharist, love of suffering as participation in Christ’s Passion, and humility expressed through hidden service within the convent. Saint Alphonsa endured severe illnesses and physical pain throughout her life, including severe burns from an accident in childhood, eczema, chronic digestive issues, recurring infection, weakness and other complications. Rather than complaining, she offered her sufferings to God for the salvation of souls and for the holiness of the Church. Her patience and joyful acceptance of suffering became central to her reputation for holiness.

Saint Alphonsa died on 28 July 1946 at the young age of 35 in Bharananganam, Kerala. Soon after her death, many people began visiting her tomb and reporting answered prayers and healings. This widespread devotion and reported healings led the Church to investigate her life and miracles. She was beatified on 8 February 1986 by Pope John Paul I and was canonised on 12 October 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. Her tomb at Bharananganam is now a major pilgrimage centre. Today, Saint Alphonsa is a symbol of hope for millions, especially for those who suffer physically or emotionally. She is often called the “Little Flower of India,” reflecting her gentle spirit and hidden holiness. Saint Alphonsa teaches the value of redemptive suffering, trust in God’s will, the beauty of humility and purity, and perseverance in faith even during hardships. Her life continues to inspire people who struggle with illness or hardship, as she is often invoked as a patron for those enduring physical suffering.
