The Immaculate heart of Mary veneration is said to be started before the 17th century by St John Eudes, a French priest. It is currently celebrated by the church on the third Saturday after Pentecost. The Immaculate heart of Mary at its very core is the “the great purity and love of the heart of the blessed virgin Mary” as Pope Pius XII said. When we say the ‘Immaculate heart’ of Mary, what we really mean is the different approach Mother Mary has towards God the loving Father, God the son which she nurtured and cared for and her motherly love for the us. Her heart went through a lot of pain throughout her time on Earth especially during a time where she was conceived with Jesus before her marriage with Joseph, to loosing Joseph early on and finally seeing her own Son being brutally murdered on that cross. Throughout all this, we never see in the Bible where Mother Mary is complaining, rather she stays grounded in her faith and trusts God plan even when she could not understand it.
What might be so special about the heart of Mary to be celebrated right? St Louis de Montfort said, “If you put all the love of all the mothers into one heart, it still would not equal the love of the heart of Mary for her children.” This very fact that her heart was filled with so much of love, when we honour her heart, we are ultimately honouring Jesus. An interesting characteristic that the Bible teach us about Mother Mary’s hear From Luke 2:52 is that she kept all things in her heart and she pondered about them, just like how she intervened at the wedding at Cana, she had the worries of the family and shame they would face in her heart and when she told her son he immediately had to do something. It is very clear, how Mother Marys heart is so precious to God and therefore it should be to us as well, as we should be always in her heart for her let Jesus know that he immediately needs to act on it. Mother Marys immaculate heart is almost like a cheat code to get things done and therefore we need to make more use of this beautiful gift of Mother Mary Jesus has given us this to get more close to him.
